Diversity

: the quality or state of having many different forms, types, ideas, etc.

: the state of having people who are different races or who have different cultures in a group or organization

We talk a lot around the Martin Luther King holiday about diversity. The schools all have programs. It is a good reminder and a good opportunity to recognize and celebrate our differences.

Today’s message adds to the diversity message. Specifically it reminds us what diversity is and is not. It is inclusive. It is in addition to and not in place of. It does not seek to stomp out other cultures, beliefs and values.

Diversity does not let us off the hook. Just because someone else is doing something that may be acceptable to them does not make it right for us. If we feel in our soul it is wrong, it is wrong. Diversity does not excuse bad manners. A good example would be fads. Look at the fad of wearing your jeans down around your thighs so that your cool underwear shows. It is against school policy. It is offensive to many people. Just because it is a fad and their friends are doing it does not make it ok. It does not mean that parents should  let their children go to school inappropriately dressed. The “everybody does it” is not an excuse and does not make it right.

Diversity means we accept others right to choose. It does not mean we have to choose the same thing. It does not mean it is wrong if we do not. Diversity is the golden rule in action…..Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

That is the HOPE. And so it is.

Bit by bit, piece by piece, HOPE by HOPE action steps anyone can take…….

-Meditate/pray….be true to yourself.

-Drink at least half your body weight in water.

-Get outdoors and take in at least 10 deep breaths.s

-Celebrate being you.

-A 1/2 school day.

-Lunch with Carol.

-John doing so well. Laughs with Cathy.
