Stillness of Summer

by Christopher O’Donnell

For your consideration…..

How perfect is this picture? I just love when I find the exact perfection I am looking for to go with our message. The “Stillness of Summer”. Is that where we are at? Are we taking the time to notice the stillness?

For our message today we were given the following song. Most of you will remember it. HOPEfully you had not forgotten it as I had.

“Learn To Be Still”
by the Eagles

It’s just another day in paradise
As you stumble to your bed
You’d give anything to silence
Those voices ringing in your head
You thought you could find happiness
Just over that green hill
You thought you would be satisfied
But you never will-
Learn to be still

We are like sheep without a shepherd
We don’t know how to be alone
So we wander ’round this desert
And wind up following the wrong gods home
But the flock cries out for another
And they keep answering that bell
And one more starry-eyed messiah
Meets a violent farewell-
Learn to be still
Learn to be still

Now the flowers in your garden
They don’t smell so sweet
Maybe you’ve forgotten
The heaven lying at your feet

There are so many contradictions
In all these messages we send
(We keep asking)
How do I get out of here
Where do I fit in?
Though the world is torn and shaken
Even if your heart is breakin’
It’s waiting for you to awaken
And someday you will-
Learn to be still
Learn to be still

You just keep on runnin’
Keep on runnin’

The seasons bring reminders of the cycles of our lives. Spring brings so much newness and HOPE. There is an awakening, anticipation and expectation.
And sure enough summer arrives. We are living it. Do we feel awakened? Are we living our anticipation? Did we get what we expected?
HOPEfully you can answer yes to all of those questions. But if not, we need to ask why. Almost always the answer is lack of definition. We are just not specific. Why aren’t we specific? Because we have followed all the crazy paths and people in HOPE that we will recognize our own life purpose. We HOPE it will jump right out in front of us.
Can that happen? Sure, but rarely. It is more likely that we just get clues. But even then the clues are easy to miss, if we do not “learn to be still” so we can process them.
We don’t have to run or chase anything. We have everything we need right in front of us. “Heaven is laying at our feet.” “The world is torn and shaken” but your heart is “waiting for you to awaken and someday it will. Learn to be still.”
That is the HOPE. And so it is.
Bit by bit, piece by piece, HOPE by HOPE action steps anyone can take…..
-Meditate/pray….your, mine, our answers are int he stillness.
-Drink lots of water. Not only does water help keep our body moving, it helps with our clarity of body, mind and spirit.
-Get outdoors and take in at least 10 deep breaths. Listen to your breath. Listen to Mother Earth around you.
-What is your biggest HOPE.…dream. What does it look like? What does it feel like? What does it smell like? What does it sound like? Journal that.
What made me smile yesterday……

-A really efficient morning. All tasks done and Dude and I were to Stillwater by 10:30.
-A picture perfect day for a nice walk along the river.
-Writing on the back deck.
-Good planning with Cathy.
Love, Blessings and Gratitude,
Chris
